Štrekna Cycling Trail

Following old tracks to new cycling experiences

Štrekna is a cycling trail that runs along the abandoned route of the former railway line that connected Velenje with Dravograd. It is one of the best-maintained cycling trails in Slovenia in terms of infrastructure, with a picturesque panorama of Pohorje and Uršlja gora and an experience while riding through the Huda Luknja gorge. It is asphalted for its entire length of 35 kilometers, uniformly marked and separated from traffic. There are numerous stops along the route with all the equipment available to cyclists, and the Štrekna bus with a bicycle trailer also runs on its route.

Our goals

Develop the Štrekna Cycling Trail into one of the key tourism products, with which we will attract new guests and cycling enthusiasts to the destination and inspire them to further explore the Koroška destination.
Develop a tourist offer along the route itself so that tourists stay at the destination longer.
With excellent cycling infrastructure, encourage all users to fully utilize sustainable mobility in the region - even upon arrival at the destination itself, which significantly contributes to the region's orientation towards green tourism.

Štrekna enriches the tourist offer of Koroška

The project promotes the sustainable development of the region and contributes to the economic development of the region: development of the tourist offer, increasing the number of tourist arrivals and overnight stays.

The project contributes to the overall recognition of the Koroška destination.

The project puts the region on the map as an attractive destination for nature lovers and sustainable tourism, which in the long term improves its competitiveness in the tourism market.

The project connects the Koroška region with the Šaleška Valley.

Štrekna and its successful turns

Establishment of the Štrekna bus, which provides free transportation along the cycling route between July and September and has a bicycle trailer.

The arrangement of the two missing sections of the Štrekna (Otiški Vrh-Dravograd and Gornji Dolič-Velenje), which, with a few minor exceptions, is now fully connected and has a total length of 35 kilometers.

The first cycling connection with uniform marking based on the then new regulations.
