Incubator or accelerator: which one to choose for your business?

The terms business incubator and accelerator are often used interchangeably, but in practice they do not mean the same thing. Both are part of a supportive environment for entrepreneurs, but they differ mainly in terms of the stage of development of the company, the intensity and duration of support, and the goals of the programs. Understanding these differences is important, as making the wrong choice can mean wasting time or missing opportunities.

A thought-provoking experience

I was on this path myself at the beginning of my work at RRA Koroška. It started with a conversation that really stuck in my memory. About 14 years ago, an academic colleague introduced me to the operation of successful accelerators abroad. I proudly said that it was similar to our incubator and that we were doing the same things. Of course, she didn't agree with me, and I didn't agree with her. Later, my curiosity wouldn't let me rest - I delved deeper into the topic and realized that I was wrong. This experience encouraged me to understand the differences more deeply and reflect on the role of MPIK.

I later saw this in practice. One of the companies included in the Koroška Network Business Incubator was also included in the Wayra accelerator in London for six months. The founder openly shared his experience with us, which gave us direct insight into the differences between the two approaches and significantly influenced the development of MPIK.

Incubator: a space for idea development and gradual growth

A business incubator is primarily intended for individuals and teams in the early stages. These are entrepreneurs who have an idea, but are mostly still testing their business model and looking for the right direction for development. Incubators offer longer and more flexible support, which includes affordable space rental, mentoring, training, assistance in developing a business model, and access to the community and basic infrastructure. The key advantage of an incubator is that it provides a safe environment for testing ideas.

Accelerator: a program for faster growth

Business accelerators are intended for startups that already have a developed product, first users or at least a clearly confirmed business opportunity or unique value proposition. Above all, the desire for rapid growth! These are time-limited and intensive programs, the main goal of which is to accelerate the growth of the company. The programs are often selective, include work with experienced mentors, intensive networking and preparation for obtaining investments. They usually end with a public presentation (so-called demo day), where the companies present themselves to potential investors.

Main differences in practice

The main difference between an incubator and an accelerator is therefore in the stage of development of the company and the pace of work. Incubators are intended for the early stage, when the idea is still being formed and tested, and the pace is more gradual. Accelerators, on the other hand, target companies that have already passed the initial stage and want to grow quickly, so the programs are shorter and significantly more intensive with the ultimate goal of obtaining investment.

It is important to understand that just as an incubator is not just an office, an accelerator is not a magic shortcut to investment. Incubators also often have companies that could already be part of accelerators – and that is exactly what we all want. Both programs can be very useful, but only if the company enters them at the right stage of development. However, it is up to the team itself which path it will choose.

So what to choose?

The decision between an incubator and an accelerator therefore depends primarily on the current stage of your company. It is important to emphasize that the choice is not a question of which form of support is better, but rather which is more appropriate at a given moment.

Experience and practice show that the key difference in deciding on one option or another is ultimately the team behind the idea. Their ambition, willingness to take risks, hard work and sacrifice are what often weigh in the end. And not just the idea and its (apparent) potential.

Support in developing ideas and decisions

Regardless of the stage of your company's development, it is important to choose an environment that allows you to progress and minimizes risks on your entrepreneurial path. If you are considering joining support programs or need guidance in developing your idea or company, you can contact the Network Business Incubator Koroška. We will offer you assistance within the framework of our consulting and mentoring programs, or, if necessary, connect you with investors and accelerators from our partner network.
