In the expanded partnership, we aim to build on the success story of the original TRANS-BORDERS project and continue our efforts to improve cross-border public passenger transport between multimodal hubs in the Slovenia-Austria cross-border area. In addition to the planned upgrades of public transport services, new open-source digital information systems developed during the project will also be piloted and tested. The project brings together partners from two border regions: one connecting Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland, and the other Austria, Slovenia and Italy.

Goals and purpose:

  • Joint development of pilot measures and solutions in the field of cross-border open passenger information systems.
  • Preparation and implementation of smart bus stop concepts in terms of multimodality.
  • Introducing and upgrading public transport services adapted to conditions in rural and peripheral areas.

Vision:

For almost a decade, we have been striving to improve conditions for residents in the field of public passenger transport in the region and beyond. Such cross-border projects are an effective tool for both upgrading services based on experience and knowledge from abroad and promoting our region in the international environment.

Who is the project intended for:

The pilot activities aim to improve the (cross-border) public transport offer and user experience, so the project is intended for existing public transport users in the region, while at the same time encouraging all residents of the region to make greater use of more environmentally friendly modes of mobility. From the point of view of implementation, the project is intended for institutions operating mainly in the field of public passenger transport/mobility (regional agencies, transport providers, (traffic) database managers, state transport management authorities, etc.)

Benefits for residents (users) and the region as a whole:

  • Connectivity (cross-border) and thus improved conditions for the economy and general well-being.
  • Promoting and recognising the region in the international environment and establishing new partnerships.
  • New (pilot) services within public passenger transport tailored to the user
  • Development of multimodal hubs in the region and indirectly improved infrastructure related to public transport (smart stops).
  • Improved user experience when using (cross-border) public transport.
  • Specific public transport services (possibility of transporting bicycles as part of public transport).
  • Contribution to reducing personal motor traffic (cars).
  • Transfer of good practice examples from abroad.
  • Strengthening the competences and expertise of staff in the field of sustainable mobility.

Success stories:

The project is in its initial phase, so the first tangible results of the planned activities are expected to be available at the end of 2025. From the original TB project (2017-2020), the Štrekna bus and the Saturday cycling train services in the region have been recognized.
