Coworking - an increasingly popular way of working

What is coworking?
Have you ever worked from home and missed contact with others? The solution is coworking – a space where everyone can work independently, but at the same time not remain isolated. It is a space that encourages collaboration, the exchange of ideas and creativity, while also offering the flexibility and equipment necessary for successful work. Instead of your own office, you only rent a workplace - a desk, a chair, a chest of drawers - in a larger common space, which is also used by other users.
How did it start?
The term coworking was first used by Bernie DeKoven in 1999, and Brad Neuberg popularized it in 2005 to describe a space where independent creatives and entrepreneurs work together. He founded the Spiral Muse Coworking Community in San Francisco – a small space with a few tables, a couch and a kitchen, available for $100 per month. This is considered the official beginning of coworking. Although the space closed after a year, the idea of collaborative work took hold and spread around the world. (Source: Wikipedia )
Why get involved in coworking?
Coworking offers an affordable and flexible environment with all the necessary equipment – a workplace, internet, meeting rooms and a common area. For example, the Coworking MPIK Innovatorium also includes meeting rooms and technical equipment, so an individual or team can start working quickly and without additional costs. At the same time, coworking is not just a place to work, but a community that connects entrepreneurs, creators and professionals.
The main advantages of coworking include:
- flexibility – use of space as needed, without long-term commitments,
- community and networking – contact with people, ideas and opportunities,
- support and events – access to workshops, mentors and knowledge,
- Stimulating environment – the presence of others motivates you and encourages creativity.
Although coworking brings many advantages, working there is most successful if you are self-initiative, open to collaboration, and ready for the dynamics of a shared work environment.
Who is coworking suitable for?
Are you still wondering who coworking is for? Or do you think it's only for young entrepreneurs and "freelancers with laptops"? In fact, it is intended for a very wide range of people, even those who don't have their own business yet. To give you an idea, we can list at least the following potential users of coworking:
- self-employed entrepreneurs and freelancers who do not have their own office but want a tidy space and contact with like-minded individuals,
- individuals and teams with ideas that have not yet been launched as companies, but want to test and develop them,
- startup teams and young companies looking for an affordable space to grow, collaborate and network,
- students and researchers who need a professional environment for project work and contact with the business community,
- creatives and digital nomads who value flexibility, community and a space equipped with modern technology,
- business people on the go who need a quiet corner to work or prepare for a meeting,
- Remote employees who return to the company headquarters only occasionally and are therefore looking for a flexible workplace close to home.
