The UNESCO Global Geopark Karavanke covers the area of 14 municipalities in the border area between Slovenia and Austria. 5 of them are located on the Slovenian side (Črna na Koroškem, Mežica, Prevalje, Ravne na Koroškem, Dravograd), and 9 on the Austrian side (Feistritz ob Bleiburg/Bistrica nad Pliberkom, Gallizien/Galicija, Globasnitz/Globasnica, Bleiburg/Pliberk, Zell/Sele, Neuhaus/Suha, Bad Eisenkappel/Železna Kapla, Sittersdorf/Žitara vas, Lavamünd/Labot). All of them are distinguished by an exceptionally rich geological heritage.

The goals of the Karavanke Geopark are awareness-raising, information and education about the geological and other natural and cultural heritage in the Karavanke Geopark, tourism development and cross-border cooperation. The Karavanke Geopark also pursues these goals in the implementation of the new project EUfutuR: Future Europe - Identity, Internationalization and Institutionalization - Karavanke Geopark, with which we want to:

  • Strengthen bilateral cooperation between residents and actively involve them in the activities of the Karavanke Geopark.
  • To improve the visibility and internationally establish the Karavanke Geopark through the activities of the UNESCO Geoparks Network.
  • To adapt the management organization of the Karavanke Geopark for more efficient development of the cross-border region, in the form of a European Grouping for Territorial Cooperation (EGTC).

EUfutuR is a cross-border cooperation project implemented within the framework of the Interreg VA Slovenia-Austria Cooperation Programme in the 2014-2020 programming period and is co-financed by the European Union - from the European Regional Development Fund - and by the Province of Koroška.

More information about the Interreg VA Slovenia-Austria 2014-2020 program can be found at www.si-at.eu.
