Draft Regional Spatial Plan presented: a common vision for development Koroške
At a press conference held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, the draft Regional Spatial Plan for the Koroško development region was presented in more detail, which represents an important basis for the coordinated development of the region, as it connects local and national interests and defines priority areas for the development of individual activities.
A regional spatial plan is a strategic spatial act by which the state and municipalities agree and coordinate on the spatial development of an individual development region and determine essential development opportunities. It sets out the vision and goals of the region's spatial development, the concept of the region's spatial development, and the guidelines and measures for further spatial planning.
After several years of intensive preparation, the ministry has begun the preparation of the first generation of regional spatial plans (RSP). The management of the RSP preparation process was entrusted to regional development agencies with public authorization, and the production was entrusted to external producers in the field of spatial planning in accordance with public procurement regulations.
The document places special emphasis on improving accessibility, developing the economy and exploiting natural and cultural potentials, which represent an important opportunity for the further development of tourism and the quality of life in the region. An important part of the preparation of the RPP is also the definition of a polycentric network of centers, which represents the basis for planning activities, services and transport connections at the regional level.
The RPP is considered a strategic spatial plan, its goal and purpose is primarily to achieve sustainable (coordinated, rational and economical) development and a comprehensive approach to spatial planning. When preparing the RPP, the state (departments, ministries and state public services) together with the municipalities in the development region must agree on essential development priorities and plan them together in the RPP. The document must be prepared and adopted by the end of 2027 at the latest, so that it can assist in development programming and in the creation of integrated development projects, which, according to EU requirements, must demonstrate coordinated economic, social and environmental needs in a specific area. Along with the draft RPPs, draft environmental reports and urban and landscape designs for individual areas within the development regions are also being prepared.
Another public presentation is planned for the end of the year as part of RRA Koroška. The aim is to involve the general public as much as possible through the public publication of documents. Comments are still being collected, and the operational implementation of the coordination is planned for the summer, said Mateja Bratuša.
